Queenstown is a lake town in Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand, and it is unusually well placed for this: the mountains start at the edge of the built-up area. What the gap really buys. $625 separates the cheapest fare from our top pick, and it is not buying better weather or a better pilot. It is buying distance: 20 minutes above the town against four hours that reach the fiord and put you on the water. If a day trip from Queenstown has to include Fiordland, that is the price of the ticket. If it does not, the money is better spent on minutes than on mileage.
